Blank

I stared blankly at the computer screen, trying to get some ideas for this entry.

It has been quite a long while since I last write anything, apart from work related reports. I longed for my creative juice to flow. To have words flow through my fingers on to the keyboard.

Speaking of keyboard, earlier this month, I upgraded my tablet. The OTG adapter and the keyboard was working just fine. Until suddenly this morning the new tablet refused to detect the keyboard. Imagine my frustration of having to do tech support using only the small touchscreen keyboard on the tablet. You can't really do any serious ten-fingers-typing on the touchscreen.

So, off I went to a gadget shop to buy replacement OTG adapter. It only cost me RM 3. While testing the adapter and the keyboard at the counter, the good sales assistant looks on and enquired about my setup. I casually asked him if the shop have any small keyboard like what I was using. I told him that the tablet can't power up the normal-size keyboard. He said they don't have the mini keyboard, but...

He casually walked over one of the shelves, and reached out for a box. Out came a foldable bluetooth keyboard!

After testing the keyboard, I was sold!

Now it seems to me, it is becoming a pattern to have August as the month for IT upgrades!

Few and Very Far A Part

Those words aptly describe the updates to this blog.

It has been more than a year since my last update. And last year, there were only two entries.  I'll try to do better this year.

Let start with what motivated me to update this blog today:
An OTG adaptor for Android device.

Initially I bought it so that I could plug my thumb drive to my andriod tablet. Then rumaging through my old stuff, I found an old keyboard for mom's now-faulty android tablet. out of curiousity I plugged it in...

Now I have a nifty little thing that I can use to update this blog.

Hopefully, with this nifty little thing, there will be more frequent update in this blog!

For Malaysians out there, happy Hari Merdeka ke-59!

Unifi Modem Hack

No physical hacking nor computer programming was done to the little modem. This post is inspired by a conversation I had with a friend who told of another friend's complaint about the modem (am I making any sense?).

Almost everyone who has modem for his/her internet connection would have had this problem at some point of his/her (internet) life: modem hang. If you don't already know what is it, it's the problem of not being able to connect the internet but is solved merely by switching off and on the modem (or commonly called resetting the modem or modem reset).

I too had the same problem started a few days after the Unifi installation. I too, took the same solution for weeks: modem reset. Then I realized that the USB port on the modem (intended for programming the modem) is just like any other USB port. So...
Hacked?!

I plugged in a cheap laptop cooling fan to that USB port. The modem is switched on almost 24/7. It is in an area without air conditioned; in fact the area have slightly higher temperature compare to the rest of the house during midday. I switched the modem off just to give it a break for 5 minutes or so, every 4 or 5 days. It has been more than a year now, I still use the same modem that they first installed and have no more "modem hang" problem!

I'm not sure if the newer modems come with that USB port. Good luck!

Test entry

I had to change to a new (secondhand) phone. I couldn't get my trusty ol' T5 to go online with the new (secondhand) phone. So no updating blog from the T5.

After searching high and low, I finally found a software to update blog directly from my new (secondhand) phone - Samseng SGH I600. The typo was intentional, quoting a lady selling handphones.

However, I still prefer to update my blog using my T5. Maybe because I'm used to scribbling on its touch screen. On i600, I have no choice but to use the tiny QWERTY keyboard. It will take some times to get to use to it.I'll continue my previous story as soon as I get the hang of this new keyboard. Stay tune!

My personal assistant

I lost my personal assistant for one week. Before that, he was not in talking terms with me. Then he was gone. I tried to find him high and low. He left no trace.

I have become very dependent of him. He keeps track all my appointments. He keeps me company on my bus ride. He bring me news and mails. Some times he sings me to sleep and wakes me in the morning. I was at lost when he left.

Now, he has returned. Eventhough he is still not in speaking terms, I'm glad he has return. My personal assistant, a digital one - my Tungsten T5.

Configuration for Tungsten T5

Since the previous post was about configuring my T5 to blog, I should add more about configuring it to use the Celcom 3G.

I requote my first entry of this blog:

Before setting the T5, make sure your phone have been configure:
1. Follow the steps in the website (http://www.celcom.com.my) to configure the telephone
2. Verify that the setting is correct, try to access the celcom wap portal using the Nokia 6233.

Here's how you configure the T5:

Step 1: Configure the phone connection in your palm
1. Go to Preferences > connection
2. Click "new"
3. Name: Nokia<-[any name you want]
Connect to: phone
Via: Bluetooth
Device: [search for your phone but make sure you switch on the phone bluetooth]
Model: Standard GSM
4. click "details..."
5. Speed: 115 200bps
Init string: +cgdcont=1,"IP","celcom3g"
Click "ok"
6. Click "ok" to safe the phone connection.
7. Click "done"

Step 2: Setting up & making network connection
1. Go to preferences > network
2. Click "new"
3. Service: Celcom3G <-[any name you want]
User name: g
Password: g

phone: *99***1#
4. Click "connect" to log on to the network. (By the way, don't forget to turn on the phone bluetooth )

Step 3: Browsing the internet
1. Launch your browser. I use the Blazer that was pre'installed' in the T5

Test conclusion

I thought mo:blog don't work with the new blogger thingy because of the incredibly long new user id. So I created a new one, but it didn't work either.

Then I thought new blogger no longer support this thing call API. No, it's not the Malay word for 'fire'. It's a computer programming term.

I searched for the fix. Even downloaded and re-install the mo:blog in my T5. Still it wouldn't work.

Just now I chanced upon a website for developers (can't remember the URL). Glancing through a bunch of programming codes, I saw the word 'uri'. Similar word is in the mo:blog settings. So I tried replacing the 'www' in the settings, with 'beta'. It worked!
Test #2
First test seems to work. Test #2 is using different id

I've not been able to update this blog from my palm since I accidently upgraded to google thingy.

More New Gadget... Bluetooth Dongle

The old one had been intermittent since last week. Some times it wouldn't work. But after plugging and unplugging, as well as restarting the program, it would work. However this morning, it refused to work. Even after I restart my pc.

Reluctantly I headed to the computer shop to find a new dongle. Turns out some people don't call it dongle, they call it bluetooth adaptor. After scouting high and low (literally! I actually walked up and down the mall) I finally settled for one. Brought it back to theroom, but couldn't get the driver installed. Had to go back to the shop. I brought along my laptop, just in case the replacement was also faulty. Didn't want to have to go again.

So there I was, installing the thing. Yup the replacement cd could work. Unfortunately, the dongle refused to connect with my 6233. The shop assistant kept saying to me that use card reader to transfer stuff to handphone. Why would you use bluetooth only to transfer files. I told him I need the bluetooth to connect to internet. They were amazed. I guess they never heard of anyone doing that. Needless to say, they don't know how to get the pc to connect to the internet.

However, heads down to the the man, he helped to get the 6233 to connect to the pc. As he said, at least we know the new dongle works. The internet part, he don't know. We came to an agreement, I would take the dongle home for a night, and find out how to get it to connect to internet. If I still failed, I would return the dongle, and he would replace it with something of similar value. I was frustrated, I want my internet! But I agreed anyway.

I glad I did. I finally managed to get it connected to the internet. Turns out the new dongle is a bit more advance from my previous dongles (yes, I've had 2). That's why it was a bit complicated to get the thing configured. While connected to the internet, I could hot-synch my palm. My previous dongles would give the error message somewhere along the line "the bluetooth device is being used..".

With more configuring, maybe I could get my palm to share internet connection with my pc. For the time being, I just hope that I don't have to reconfigure everything after I shut down my laptop.

Yet another cellphone

Two days ago I fell into a deep sleep while commuting to KL. As it turned out, it wasn't the only thing that fell. My trusty K700i also fell. I really like the simplicity of the design. Simple camera to take reasonably sharp pictures for this blog. Internet connectivity for my T5 / computer to update this blog. And also little white light in case I need to find my car keys in the dark. Oh, last but not least, the radio with superb audio quality to keep me company. What sadden me most was that I didn't get the chance to use it until it broke. This is the second phone I lost in so far.

So yesterday was spent in scouting for the right phone. I had almost bought the same K700i because I really like the features. But since I've always told myself, next phone would be a 3G, so I had to find one. Phone with features that I wanted was not manufactured with my price. Knowing how I (ab)used phones, I wasn't prepared to pay more than RM1k for a phone. I finally settled for a Nokia 6233, which suprised those who knew me. I am not into Nokia. What can I do, that's the only phone I found met most if not all, the critirea.

Today was spent in configuring the 6233 for 3G settings. Just like the K700i, it took me several calls to get it done. I almost blew my top talking to the good people in the call centre. Fortunately, the setting the computer and T5 is the same. Otherwise it would be weeks before I could blog about it. Now, I'm back online. Unfortunately, from where I am right now, there's no 3G coverage. So, I have yet to experience increased in speed which is a bit dissappointing considering that most of the time, I'll be online from here.

By the way, my previous phone broke around this time, last year. Perhaps this is God way of saying, "Go out and buy things for your self". :)

It's mute!
Some time last week I discovered that my T5 is mute. The built-in speaker no longer works. Just a week earlier I lost the original stylus.

Called the nice people of Palm. They said it's already out of warranty. I have the option of sending it for repair(US$98) or replace it(US$125).

Up till now, I still have not decide whether to repair or replace. Other than being mute, the T5 still works. What I really need is a new stylus.

My First Entry

Today is the last day of the first month (translation : 31 January 2006). Some where before the new year began, I made a list for some of the things I wish to accomplish this year. Among the item in the list, is to travel / visit at least one place or experience one new thing in a month. Another item on the list is to create a blog. One month has passed, still I went no where. If I don't start this blog today, well, I think another resolution gone to the drain.

The first entry is connecting to the internet using my Tungsten T5 . After countless attempts in troubleshooting with Celcom call centre, finally we (the agent at the call centre by the name Daniel and I) managed to get the Tungsten online. In Celcom website, no guideline on how to connect Tungsten T5 is provided. I'm using Siemens S45 to connect Tungsten T5 to the internet via GPRS (post paid account). The network provider is Celcom.

Before setting the T5, make sure your phone have been configure:
1. Follow the steps in the website (http://www.celcom.com.my) to configure the telephone
2. Verify that the setting is correct, try to access the celcom wap portal using the Siemens s45

Here's how you configure the T5:

Step 1: Configure the phone connection in your palm
1. Go to Preferences > connection
2. Click "new"
3. Name: siemens<- any="" br="" name="" want="" you=""> Connect to: phone
Via: Infrared
Model: Standard GSM
4. click "details..."
5. Speed: 115 200bps
Init string: +cgdcont=1,"IP","celcom.net.my"
Click "ok"
6. Click "ok" to safe the phone connection.
7. Click "done"

Step 2: Setting up & making network connection
1. Go to preferences > network
2. Click "new"
3. Service: Celcom <- any="" br="" name="" want="" you=""> User name: g
Password: g
connection: Siemens <- 1="" br="" from="" name="" same="" step=""> phone: *99***1#
4. Click "connect" to log on to the network. (By the way, don't forget to turn on the phone infrared. To do this go to menu > setup > connectivity > IrDA )

Step 3: Browsing the internet
1. Launch your browser. I use the Blazer that was pre'installed' in the T5
2. Type the URL of the site you want to go.

It's that easy, right? It wasn't so if you are the first to call and ask. For prepaid accounts, set up might be a bit different. Give the fella at the call centre a call to get the configuration.

Next, I'll have to figure out how to update this blog using my T5.
